Accessibility Statement

Last updated: 3 April 2026

Our commitment

MatchDay UK is committed to making our website accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of ability or technology. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities and more usable for everyone.

We recognise that accessibility is an ongoing effort. We are working to improve the experience across the site, and we are honest about areas where we still have work to do.

What we currently do

We have taken the following steps to support accessibility on MatchDay UK:

  • Semantic HTML — We use proper heading hierarchy, landmarks, and native HTML elements to provide meaningful structure for assistive technologies.
  • ARIA labels — Where native semantics are not sufficient, we use ARIA attributes to provide additional context for screen readers.
  • Keyboard navigation — Interactive elements such as links, buttons, and navigation menus can be operated using a keyboard alone.
  • Colour contrast — We have chosen colours that meet WCAG AA contrast ratios against our dark background, making text legible in a range of viewing conditions.
  • Responsive design — The site is designed mobile-first and adapts to different screen sizes and zoom levels up to 200%.
  • Text sizing — We use relative units so that text scales when users adjust their browser font size settings.

Known limitations

We are aware of the following accessibility issues and are working to address them:

  • Live score updates — Score changes are fetched dynamically and may not be immediately announced by screen readers. We are investigating the use of ARIA live regions to improve this, but real-time sports data presents challenges for consistent announcement behaviour across different screen readers.
  • Third-party content — Some content sourced from external providers, such as news article images and video thumbnails, may lack adequate alternative text descriptions. We do not always have control over the quality of metadata provided by these sources.
  • Complex data tables — League standings and statistical tables contain dense information that may be difficult to navigate with assistive technologies. We are reviewing how best to present this data accessibly.

Technologies we use

MatchDay UK is built with the following technologies:

  • HTML
  • CSS (Tailwind CSS)
  • JavaScript
  • Next.js (React framework with server-side rendering)
  • WAI-ARIA for supplementary accessibility information

We rely on these technologies, along with modern web browsers and assistive technologies, to provide an accessible experience. The site is tested primarily in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, and Safari and Chrome on mobile.

When reporting an issue, it helps if you can include the page address (URL), a description of the problem, and the browser and assistive technology you were using.
