Cookie Policy

Last updated: 3 April 2026

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device when you visit them. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, remember your preferences, and provide information to site owners. Cookies can be "first-party" (set by the site you are visiting) or "third-party" (set by another domain).

Alongside cookies, modern websites also use related technologies such as localStorage, sessionStorage, and service workers to store data locally on your device. This policy covers all of these technologies as used on matchdayuk.com.

How MatchDay UK uses cookies

We aim to keep our use of cookies and similar technologies to an absolute minimum. At present, MatchDay UK does not set any first-party or third-party cookies on your device.

Analytics

We use Vercel Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Vercel Analytics is a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics service. It does not set any cookies, does not use localStorage, and does not track individual users across sessions. All data is aggregated and anonymous. No personal information is collected through our analytics.

Service worker and offline caching

MatchDay UK uses a service worker (sw.js) to improve performance and enable basic offline functionality. A service worker is a script that your browser runs in the background, separate from the web page. It allows us to cache pages, stylesheets, scripts, and images so that content loads faster on repeat visits and remains partially available if you lose your internet connection.

The service worker cache is stored locally on your device and does not send any data to our servers. It simply keeps a copy of resources you have already downloaded. You can clear this cache at any time through your browser settings (see the section below on managing stored data).

localStorage and sessionStorage

We may use your browser's localStorage to save user preferences such as your preferred leagues, display settings, or dismissed notices. This data is stored entirely on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.

sessionStorage works in a similar way but is automatically cleared when you close the browser tab. We may use it to hold temporary state such as scroll position or form data within a single browsing session.

Neither localStorage nor sessionStorage are cookies, but they serve a similar purpose of remembering information between page loads. You can clear this data through your browser's developer tools or settings.

Categories of storage we use

Essential (strictly necessary)

These are technologies required for the site to function correctly. They cannot be disabled without breaking core functionality.

  • Service worker cache — caches static assets and pages for faster loading and offline access
  • sessionStorage — holds temporary state within a single browsing session

Functional (non-essential)

These improve your experience but are not required for the site to work. Disabling them may mean some preferences are not remembered.

  • localStorage — saves user preferences such as preferred leagues or display settings

Analytics

As noted above, Vercel Analytics is entirely cookieless and does not store anything on your device. No consent is required for this service.

Third-party cookies

MatchDay UK does not currently use any third-party cookies. We do not embed third-party advertising, social media tracking pixels, or external analytics tools that set cookies.

If we introduce advertising or third-party services in the future that set cookies, we will update this policy and, where required by law, seek your consent before any non-essential third-party cookies are placed on your device. Any such changes will be clearly communicated through a cookie consent banner.

How to manage cookies and stored data

Although MatchDay UK does not currently set cookies, your browser gives you control over cookies and other stored data from all websites. Below are instructions for the most popular browsers.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the top right
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
  3. From here you can block cookies, clear existing cookies, or manage per-site permissions
  4. To clear service worker caches and localStorage, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, then tick "Cached images and files" and "Cookies and other site data"

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and click the hamburger menu in the top right
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security
  3. Under "Cookies and Site Data" you can clear data or manage exceptions
  4. Firefox also provides Enhanced Tracking Protection which blocks known third-party trackers by default

Safari

  1. Open Safari and go to Safari > Settings (or Preferences)
  2. Click the Privacy tab
  3. Use "Manage Website Data" to view and remove stored data for specific sites
  4. You can also enable "Block all cookies" to prevent any website from setting cookies

For other browsers, consult the browser's help documentation or settings menu. Most browsers provide similar controls under their privacy or security settings.

Impact of disabling cookies and storage

Since MatchDay UK does not rely on cookies, disabling cookies in your browser will not affect the core functionality of the site. However, if you clear or disable other storage technologies, you may notice the following:

  • Clearing the service worker cache — pages and assets will need to be re-downloaded on your next visit, and offline access will be unavailable until the cache is rebuilt
  • Clearing localStorage — any saved preferences (such as preferred leagues or display settings) will be reset to their defaults
  • Blocking JavaScript — the service worker and localStorage features require JavaScript to function. Disabling JavaScript will prevent these technologies from working, and the site may not load correctly

Updates to this policy

We may update this cookie policy from time to time, particularly if we introduce new features that require cookies or additional storage technologies. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If we introduce non-essential cookies that require your consent, we will notify you through a clear cookie consent mechanism on the site.

We encourage you to check this page periodically to stay informed about how we use cookies and related technologies.
