About RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig are German football's most controversial project and, increasingly, one of its most effective. Founded in 2009 through Red Bull's acquisition of a fifth-tier club's playing rights, they reached the Bundesliga in seven years and the Champions League semi-finals within a decade. The 50+1 rule is technically respected but visibly circumvented, which makes them unpopular with nearly every other fanbase in the country. None of that changes the football, which under successive coaches (Rangnick, Nagelsmann, Rose) has been aggressive, pressing-heavy, and built on young talent recruited through the Red Bull network. The Red Bull Arena holds 47,000 and sells out regularly, regardless of the protests. The DFB-Pokal victory in 2022 and 2023 gave the club its first major trophies.
Legends
Given the club's youth, legends are in short supply. Yussuf Poulsen has been present since the third division, the closest thing to a one-club man. Timo Werner's two spells have produced the most goals. Emil Forsberg's creativity drove the initial Champions League campaigns. Dominik Szoboszlai's brief spell showed what the development model can produce before bigger clubs come calling.
